Denunciations of ‘cultural appropriation’ are in and of themselves acknowledgments both of cultural fragility and of cultural pessimism. No successful culture has ever had to have itself ring-fenced in this way in order to thrive. Indeed, being appropriated is more often than not an emblem of cultural success.
